SDGs in the Education Courses

In 2015, the Member States of the United Nations collectively embraced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At the heart of this agenda lie the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDG goals acknowledge that eradicating poverty and addressing various forms of deprivation must be pursued in conjunction with efforts to enhance healthcare and education, mitigate inequality and promote economic advancement, all while confronting the challenges of climate change and preserving our precious oceans and forests.

LAU’s Education Program followed the university’s streamlined process by integrating the SDGs into its core and elective courses at the undergraduate, teaching diploma and graduate levels. Notably:

  1. All education courses integrate the concepts and values of SDG4 related to inclusive and equitable education.
  2. 13 courses tackle SDG10 on the need to reduce inequality. They do so through content that emphasizes the importance of education as a tool to reduce inequality of opportunities and outcomes and by providing students with the tools to enact equitable and fair teaching and educational practices.
  3. Seven courses underscore the role of SDG16 focused on Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions via teaching and leadership practices as well as through policies and other varied topics in education.
  4. Several courses stress the importance of gender equality (SDG5), climate action (SDG1), decent work and economic growth, no poverty (SDG1) and the role of SDG17 around promoting partnerships within and beyond the education sector to achieve sustainable development.
