SDGs in the English Courses
In 2015, the Member States of the United Nations collectively embraced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. At the heart of this agenda lie the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDG goals acknowledge that eradicating poverty and addressing various forms of deprivation must be pursued in conjunction with efforts to enhance healthcare and education, mitigate inequality and promote economic advancement, all while confronting the challenges of climate change and preserving our precious oceans and forests.
LAU’s English Program integrates the SDGs into its core and elective courses at the undergraduate level. Notably:
- All English courses integrate the concepts and values of SDG5 and SDG10 related to gender equality and reduced inequalities. We strongly emphasize these concepts in our three tracks: Literature, Language and Creative Writing.
- 4 courses tackle SDG1 related to drawing awareness to the growing problems of poverty, whether in existing narratives (Literature) or newly-written narratives (Creative Writing).
- 3 courses highlight the significance of SDG3 pertinent to quality education and 4 courses accentuate the values emphasized in SDG8 concerning decent work and economic growth.
- The human body—comprising physiology and psychology—and the environment—ecocriticism, as one prime example—occupy a major sector of our courses. 10 courses tackle good health and wellbeing in SDG3, 1 course tackles SDG6, and 1 course also tackles SDGs 13 and 15.
- As we strive to reinforce sustainable communities under the charter of world peace, justice and equity, and as we deal with global institutions that endorse these values, 5 courses incorporate SDG11, and 9 courses incorporate SDG16.
