SDGs in the Nutrition Courses

In 2015, the Member States of the United Nations (UN) formally adopted the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The 2030 Agenda, building on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is a universal call to action to end all forms of poverty and hunger, protect the planet, and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.

Nutrition is the key point for SDG2 “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture,” and SDG3 “Achieving good health and wellbeing,” and is an essential component for achieving many of the other targets such as SDGs 4, 5 and 12. The Nutrition Program followed the university’s streamlined process by integrating the SDGs into 30 of its major courses, namely by:

  1. Discussing and proposing community nutrition and food security-related interventions in several courses, including Community Nutrition, Nutrition in the Life Cycle and International Nutrition/Nutrition in Emergencies.
  2. Discussing the importance of limiting food waste and promoting sustainable diets in several courses, including Food Safety and Management, Food Analysis Lab, Quantity Food Production, International Nutrition/Nutrition in Emergencies and Dietetic Practicum.
  3. Training students on assessing and providing tailored nutrition care for individuals across the lifespan and in different settings to achieve good health and well-being in several courses, including Nutrition Status Assessment, Meal Planning, Nutrition in the Life Cycle and Medical Nutrition Therapy Courses and Labs.
  4. Implementing medical nutrition therapy, food safety, community nutrition and food security-related interventions in the Dietetic Practicum and Dietetic Practice Seminar.
