Psyched for Success: Psychology and Education Boot Camp (Beirut Campus)

This camp will aim to introduce participants both to the Psychology and Education programs at LAU and the various concepts they would acquire through them. The activities will be based on fun psychology experiments (developmental, cognitive and social) and soft skills practiced through role play and other hands-on activities (nonverbal communication, empathy and leadership, among others).

Myths Breakers – Can We Really Read Your Mind?

This session will rely on hands-on activities and fun myths breaker to help students define psychology and possible careers in psychology and education. Another activity will focus on providing a quick personality quiz (based on the Big Five or MBTI) and then discussing how personalities influence behavior and relationships, how they help with life choices and relationships, and whether they are they truthful and accurate.

Know Yourself – A Walk Down Memory Lane

This session will introduce students to developmental psychology through art. They will be asked to draw a self-portrait as they remember themselves 10 years in the past and imagine themselves 10 years into the future. This will allow for a discussion about the main stages of development. This activity could also focus on Erikson’s stages whereby small groups will choose a specific stage (e.g., identity vs. role confusion) to role-play a scenario representing that stage.

This session will help you explore your relationship with learning, focusing on what motivates you and identifying types of motivation to adopt to better guide your learning journey. Can You Trust Your Memory?

One activity could involve a memory game recall challenge where we show students a list of words/images for a minute, then ask them to recall as many as they can. We will explore the recency and primacy effect, comparing verbal and an auditory memory, with a focus on selective attention. Lastly, we will cover thinking styles or cognitive distortions, helping you identify their thinking styles.

Participants will gain insight into what makes a teacher impactful and inspiring.

I Feel You! Or Do You?

The first activity will focus on mirroring emotions by pairing up students; one makes a facial expression or gesture, and the other mirrors it. We will also have nonverbal communication charades, with students acting out emotions or concepts using only nonverbal cues while others guess.

This session introduces social psychology experiments exploring social influence through various fun experiments (e.g., people turning in an elevator). We will also discuss peer pressure and how social norms influence behavior.

Becoming a Leader

This session will start by an activity fostering teamwork and leadership skills by setting up an obstacle course, with one student leading a blindfolded partner through the course using only verbal instructions. Another activity will aim at practicing problem-solving and negotiation by presenting scenarios involving conflicts (e.g., between friends or classmates) and letting students role-play solutions using negotiation strategies.

This session will focus on introducing the main psychological disorders through various case studies and discussions.
