The Antigone Project: Available Online
“Explore what it means to be human today by studying what it meant to be a hero in ancient Greek times.”
This is the tagline for the HeroesX project, an online educational platform offered by Harvard University, and LAU Senior Instructor of English and Cultural Studies, Brian Prescott-Decie, is heavily involved in curating the course’s latest online content.
Brian Prescott-Decie, together with Claudia Filos (Center for Hellenic Studies, Harvard), Gregory Nagy (Professor of Classical Greek Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature, Harvard), Leonard Muellner (Professor of Classical Studies, Brandeis University), Jacqui Donlon, Jessica Eichelburg, and Sarah Scott revised Jebb’s classic translation of Sophocles’ Antigone, incorporating earlier revisions by Pierre Habel and Gregory Nagy, and including tags of key Greek terms in context which relate to the word lists for Professor Nagy’s key word lists for his HeroesX and Greek Heroes Projects.
The work was done entirely online by a team including Greek scholars and former students of the HeroesX program and supported by the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard. It is now publicly available on the Center for Hellenic Studies website. As an online publication, it is intended as a work in progress, and is accompanied by discussion boards and a wiki. It is part of an overall project to make the classics more broadly available online, and to make materials available in open source formats.
