Biological Sciences Courses Map to the UN SDGs

In 2015, the Member States of the United Nations collectively embraced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global initiative consisting of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These SDGs recognize that addressing issues like hunger, healthcare, water scarcity, environmental conservation and poverty alleviation must go hand in hand with promoting economic growth, education and social equality, all while addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
At LAU, we take pride in being one of the pioneering universities to incorporate the SDGs into our programs. The courses in we offer for Biology students are tailored to provide students with a unique perspective on how their studies can contribute to achieving the SDGs, particularly in the domains of health, zero hunger, water security, sustainable energy and environmental sustainability. Here’s how our courses are designed to achieve these objectives:
- Alignment with SDGs: Our courses introduce students to the SDGs and delve into how the principles of biology, physics and chemistry play a vital role in addressing these global challenges. By highlighting the practical applications of their scientific knowledge, students gain a deeper appreciation of their potential to contribute to the achievement of these critical goals.
- Scientific Literacy: We emphasize the development of scientific literacy among our students. This involves not only mastering the core concepts of biology, chemistry and physics, but also understanding how these sciences intersect with real-world issues related to health, nutrition and environmental sustainability. By enhancing their scientific literacy, students are better equipped to critically analyze and address complex challenges related to the SDGs.
- Engagement and Connection: Our courses are designed to actively engage students and foster a sustainable connection between humanity and the planet. Through hands-on experiments, research projects and case studies, students gain practical experience in applying their scientific knowledge to real-world problems. This approach instills a sense of responsibility and purpose, motivating students to make informed decisions that contribute to a more sustainable future.
- Foundational Understanding: We believe that every student should possess a foundational understanding of the SDGs and their underlying principles. This knowledge serves as a compass, guiding students in their future careers and personal lives. Whether they pursue careers in biology, biochemistry, environmental science or any related field, our students are well-prepared to champion sustainable practices and contribute meaningfully to the global efforts aimed at achieving the SDGs.
In essence, LAU’s biology program is not just about academic excellence, but also about nurturing a generation of scientists and professionals who are dedicated to making a positive impact on the world. By instilling a strong sense of purpose and a deep understanding of the SDGs, we empower our students to be agents of change in the pursuit of a healthier, hunger-free, more sustainable and equitable world for all.
