LAU and UNESCO Advance Climate-Resilient Water and WEFE Nexus Planning in Lebanon
The Lebanese American University (LAU), in collaboration with UNESCO, organized a two-day training workshop on “Climate-Resilient Water Planning in Lebanon” on September 23-24, 2026. The workshop brought together representatives from Lebanese public institutions, ministries, municipalities, water establishments, academia, and technical professionals.Led by Dr. Ali Karnib, Associate Professor at LAU, with contributions from the LAU Office of Sustainability, the training addressed key challenges facing Lebanon’s water sector under climate change and introduced practical approaches for drought preparedness, integrated water management, and Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus planning. Participants explored cross-sectoral interlinkages, synergies and trade-offs, as well as approaches for prioritizing climate adaptation actions and strengthening institutional coordination.
The workshop also provided a platform for dialogue between public institutions and academia, supporting more integrated, evidence-based approaches to resource governance and climate resilience in Lebanon.
According to Prof. Rony Khnayzer, Chairperson of Liberal Studies, “This initiative reflects the values and mission of a Liberal Arts education at LAU, and helps strengthen the collaboration between UNESCO and LAU in building national capacities and advancing sustainable and climate-resilient resource management in Lebanon”.
