BS in Education
Mission
The Education program at LAU strives for excellence in the preparation of qualified educators who are capable of serving as competent practitioners and leaders, adhere to professionalism, support equity and social justice and commit to constantly innovating their practices through research, scholarship and ongoing personal and professional development.
Program Objectives
Education graduates will:
- Develop knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to be competent educational practitioners.
- Demonstrate commitment to the ethics, principles and requirements of the profession.
- Design effective learning situations and motivate learners’ construction of knowledge, drawing on up-to-date educational theories, approaches and technologies.
- Demonstrate commitment to equity and social justice.
- Develop abilities and dispositions needed for the advancement of their practices through research and scholarship.
- Demonstrate commitment for ongoing personal and professional development.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of the program students will be able to:
- Demonstrate pedagogical content knowledge.
- Design effective learning situations for learners to develop knowledge, thinking skills and dispositions.
- Identify, evaluate and integrate suitable technologies to enhance learning.
- Engage in research that improves their practice.
- Professionally utilize a variety of communication techniques suitable for learners in a non-native language, including written, verbal, nonverbal and media-based communication.
- Design environments that encourage inclusive learning.
- Appreciate teaching as a scholarly endeavor.
- Make decisions related to curriculum, instruction and evaluation.
- Effectively collaborate with stakeholders.
- Practice reflective and self-directed learning that focuses on continuous professional development.
- Demonstrate commitment to ethical and legal responsibilities.
Curriculum
The BS in Education program requires the completion of 92 credits, distributed as follows:
- Thirty credits (30) of core courses.
- Thirty credits (30) of major core for each emphasis:
a. Early Childhood Education emphasis (24 credits of methods courses and 6 credits of practicum)
b. Elementary Education emphasis (Home Room Teaching) (24 credits of methods courses and 6 credits of practicum) - Liberal Arts Requirements (30 credits) (Core LAS Courses 6 credits and other LAS courses 24 credits)
